Deliberate. Adventure. Memories. Planned. Engaged. Family. Fellowship. Experiences. Explore.
It’s just 2hrs. 16 minutes (or 142 miles) from Elizabethtown, Kentucky
“Adventures Around Cincinnati: A Parent’s Guide to Unique and Memorable Places to Explore with your Kids” by Laura Hoevener and Terri Weeks (retail $18.95) is more than just a travel guide – if desired, the reader can use it as a life guide to creating memories and exploring not only within Cincinnati, but also any hometown with their companion eBook “Adventures Around You.”
For this review though, I read “Adventures Around Cincinnati.” The authors acknowledge that parents typically don’t have time to read a lengthy book, so they’ve limited the “reading” part and amped up the “guide” part.
Tip: The Introduction and Part One (Why Adventures, and Planning and Executing your own Adventures) are must reads and at approximately 20 pages combined shouldn’t tax anyone to complete. Reading these will give you the motivation and inspiration to start your own deliberate adventures with your family.
With thoughtful inclusions on the more than 120 destinations like “Stroller and wheelchair friendly” information and the approximate age range the activity would work for, it is a quick and handy guide to start your planning. Tip: One of my favorite tips is, if it’s a questionable activity (i.e. not sure your kids will like it) or if the children didn’t like it, it might be good to pair it with something you know they will enjoy (getting ice cream or a visit to a favorite park afterwards) in order to still leave a positive memory from the day.
Since we had been to the Cincinnati Zoo just over a year ago as a family, I started my reading of the guide portion with their review of the Zoo. “Adventures Around Cincinnati’s” review was right on the money as compared to how my family would have officially reviewed the Cincinnati Zoo (it’s a WONDERFUL zoo and my kids STILL talk about the animals they saw there). My only addition would be a stroller is recommended for the younger crowd because there are quite a few hills. The zoo does provide stroller rentals though, which we took advantage of when we were there because their little legs got tired quickly, and none of us were ready to go home.
I also read through all the Kentucky attractions, including the ones in and around Louisville that were covered, and for the ones we’ve visited their reviews again are what I would report as well. With that knowledge I felt confident that I could use any of their reviews to plan an adventure – maybe a day trip or a staycation depending on the distance and activity.
There is a fabulous chart at the end that lists every activity and 21 different categorizations – free, outdoor, history, animals, etc. Have a kid that is obsessed with dinosaurs? There are five adventures that have been reviewed that include dinosaurs. Don’t forget to check out the planning your own adventures help the authors give you as well after the guide portion. They’ve given “getting-started” planning examples for stay-at-home parents as well as those who work-outside-the-home or need to do weekend adventures.
I suggest having something to tag your book with as you’re reading along (my tags were reused post-it notes, but hey, they work!) because I’m ready to have some adventures.
